YA fiction is a broad and diverse genre. Over the past years, it has only grown, and now has a readership that is actually 55% adults.
But this is still a genre targeted at teenagers, making the normalisation of toxic masculinity in YA fiction even more worrying.
YA is one of the most popular and yet misunderstood categories of books.
But such a popular genre doesnβt come without the negatives. YA is crammed with harmful stereotypes and overused cliches.
Here are some of my most hated tropes in the genre.
