Title: Instructions For Dancing
Author: Nicola Yoon
Release: June 1, 2021
“Evie Thomas doesn’t believe in love anymore. Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began . . . and how it will end. After all, even the greatest love stories end with a broken heart, eventually.
As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance Studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. His philosophy is to say yes to everything–including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he’s only just met.”
Nicole Yoon is an author I am very familiar with between Everything, Everything and The Sun Is Also A Star — I had to add her newest book Instructions For Dancing. The romance and the focus on dancing had me curious to know where this story will lead. I would love to see where Evie ends up and if she will believe in love.
Title: The Box in the Woods
Author: Maureen Johnson
Genre: YA Detective
Release: June 15, 2021
“Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.
But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.”
I adore reading crime and thrillers, so when I found Don’t Look Inside The Box Of Woods was a new detective book coming out — I had to add it to a future read. I think that seeing a teen detective will give me a few Nancy Drew vibes and capture my crime reading addiction. I am excited to learn more about Stevie and her detective skills.
Title: My Contrary Mary
Author: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows
Genre: YA Dystopian, Fantasy and Historical
Release: June 22, 2021
“Welcome to Renaissance France, a place of poison and plots, of beauties and beasts, of mice and . . . queens?
Mary is the queen of Scotland and the jewel of the French court. Except when she’s a mouse. Yes, reader, Mary is an Eðian (shapeshifter) in a kingdom where Verities rule. It’s a secret that could cost her a head—or a tail.
Luckily, Mary has a confidant in her betrothed, Francis. But things at the gilded court take a treacherous turn after the king meets a suspicious end. Thrust onto the throne, Mary and Francis face a viper’s nest of conspiracies, traps, and treason. And if Mary’s secret is revealed, heads are bound to roll. “
Anything about Mary, Queen Of Scotland — I read, purchase, watch and devour. I am obsessed with her for some reason and I can not wait for this new book to come out. I have read about her plenty of times but I always see her in a new light. So, this time around — she is a shapeshifter and that is leaving me intrigued.
Title: Red Wolf
Author: Rachel Vincent
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release: July 20, 2021
“For as long as sixteen-year-old Adele can remember, the village of Oakvale has been surrounded by the dark wood—a forest filled with terrible monsters. A forest that light itself cannot penetrate.
Unlike her fellow villagers, Adele cannot avoid the dark wood.
Adele is one of a long line of guardians: women who secretly take on the form of a wolf, in order to protect their village.
But when accepting her fate means giving up the boy she loves, abandoning the future she imagined for herself, and breaking her own moral code, she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her neighbors safe.”
I am pretty sure you have read Red Riding Hood plenty of times, especially the retellings. But, this time around I like how the author was able to make Little Red a protector, strong and a guardian. I am curious to see how this new retelling will capture my mind.
Title: You & Me at the End of the World
Author: Brianna Bourne
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release: July 20, 2021
“This is no ordinary apocalypse…
Hannah Ashton wakes up to silence. The entire city around her is empty, except for one other person: Leo Sterling. Leo might be hottest boy ever (and not just because he’s the only one left), but he’s also too charming, too selfish, and too much of a disaster for his own good, let alone Hannah’s.
Stuck with only each other, they explore a world with no parents, no friends, and no school and realize that they can be themselves instead of playing the parts everyone expects of them. Hannah doesn’t have to be just an overachieving, music-box-perfect ballerina, and Leo can be more than a slacker, 80s-glam-metal-obsessed guitarist. Leo is a burst of honesty and fun that draws Hannah out, and Hannah’s got Leo thinking about someone other than himself for the first time.
Together, they search for answers amid crushing isolation. But while their empty world may appear harmless . . . it’s not. Because nothing is quite as it seems, and if Hannah and Leo don’t figure out what’s going on, they might just be torn apart forever.”
Since, I have been binge watching The Walking Dead, it only seemed fitting to add an apocalyptic book to my life. You & Me at the End of the World seems so different from the normal books I have read about the end of the world because usually it’s a group of people — not two. So, I am very excited to see how Hannah and Leo live in such a chaotic world.
Title: Poison Heart
Author: Kalynn Bayron
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release: June 29, 2021
“Briseis has a gift: she can grow plants from tiny seeds to rich blooms with a single touch.
When Briseis’s aunt dies and wills her a dilapidated estate in rural New York, Bri and her parents decide to leave Brooklyn behind for the summer. Hopefully there, surrounded by plants and flowers, Bri will finally learn to control her gift. But their new home is sinister in ways they could never have imagined–it comes with a specific set of instructions, an old-school apothecary, and a walled garden filled with the deadliest botanicals in the world that can only be entered by those who share Bri’s unique family lineage.
When strangers begin to arrive on their doorstep, asking for tinctures and elixirs, Bri learns she has a surprising talent for creating them. One of the visitors is Marie, a mysterious young woman who Bri befriends, only to find that Marie is keeping dark secrets about the history of the estate and its surrounding community. There is more to Bri’s sudden inheritance than she could have imagined, and she is determined to uncover it . . . until a nefarious group comes after her in search of a rare and dangerous immortality elixir. Up against a centuries-old curse and the deadliest plant on earth, Bri must harness her gift to protect herself and her family.”
A woman that has a magical power to make plants grow — how can I not read this? I love fantasy books involving witches and nature. So, Poison Heart will be great to read for my magical soul. I was drawn in by the stunning cover and the plot made me join the group of preorders. I am so excited to see how Briseis handles her gift and life with such a special gift.
